Every sensible psroen knows that conducting the elections successfully is way more important than staging the IPL successfully at the same time. The Government had requested the BCCI to reschedule the IPL, ostensibly to stage it successfully. Central forces are essential during elections, when they would be deployed in large numbers. They can not be spared for any other concurrent event. But after the terrorist attacks on Sri Lankan cricketers in Pakistan, deployment of a high level of security is imperative, all the more so as the IPL involves the participation of a large number of overseas cricket players. The life and limbs of these foreign players as also India's cricket stars can not be left to inadequate security. It would be a blot on India, if anything untoward happened with the overseas cricketers due to inadequate security. Thus the Government's request to reschedule the IPL, preferably after the General Elections, which is the single biggest event in a democracy, was perfectly logical. But IPL is a great entertainer in cricket crazy India and by extension a great money spinner. So vast is its profit making potential, that some of the biggest industrial houses and film stars have jumped into the IPL bandwagon. And when the stake is so high, it can't be disregarded. The BCCI has approached the government to allow it to stage the IPL on schedule or with little alterations, as rescheduling or postponement would tarnish India's image, pointing out at its inability to stage an important event on time. It would also send the image that playing in India is a big security risk.If it indeed sends such ominous signals to the international cricket community, as the BCCI fears, then it is only the truth. India is indeed vulnerable to terrorist attacks as recent events have proved. That is all the more reason to stage an event of IPL's scale in a peaceful atmosphere when adequate security can be provided without compromise.Knowing India's craze for cricket, unfortunately, certain Congress led state governments have vacillated over the issue of staging the IPL matches in their own states. They should have firmly stated that staging the IPL matches in their states during the General Elections would be impossible due to security concerns. The reason for their vacillation is that the cricket carzy voters might be annoyed at being denied the IPL entertainment. Even more unfortunately, the BJP has picked it up as an election issue and has agreed to stage IPL matches in BJP governed states. It shows how much our politicians care for democratic values. The highest national values are subverted by petty politics by Indian politicians. Indians may be cricket crazy, but they are certainly not so immature as to accord primacy to IPL over elections and their democratic rights. That the Government took such a long time to ultimately reject BCCI's proposals was partly due to Sharad Pawar, who heads the BCCI and is also an important UPA ally. Thus again, there were political compulsions, in addition to the pressure brought about by the big IPL sponsors. Lalit Modi, the shrew tried to strike a hard bargain, but lost.Ultimately, the BCCI has decided to stage the IPL in another country. BCCI is an Indian organisation and is not above Indian laws. Pawar, Modi and company have had the temerity to go against their country and its democratic values. It is high time that the Government put its foot down and state that the IPL can be staged in India only after the elections and nowhere else. But considering how spineless our politicians are, that may yet remain a distant dream. -1Was this answer helpful? |
